On the left side of the screen are Elise's stats. From top to bottom, they are HP, Physical Attack (攻撃力), Physical Defense (防衛力), Magical Attack (魔法攻撃力), Magical Defense (魔法防衛力) and Money (所持金). You gain money by "picking up" (running close to) coins that jump out from enemies (or parts of enemies) that you defeat. You can also occasionally find coins from cutting the grass in fighting areas. You begin with 500 pix.
The options on the right side can change depending on where you are. In most cases, they will be Resume Game (ゲームに戻る), Equipment (装備変更), Items (アイテム), Magic Summary (魔法一覧), Option (オプション), Save (セーブ) and Return to Title (タイトルに戻る).
Resume Game, simply enough, is to return back to wherever you were, whether it be on the field, on the world map, or in town.
Equipment allows the player to change their equipment. Initially, the player will start with no equipment. Equipment can only be placed on slots that are not dashed out. In other words, players start with only 2 item slots. On the left is a list of all of the items the player has that they can equip. The first option is to remove the currently equipped item.
Items shows a list of all of the items the player has collected thus far on the left side. The first option sorts the items by type, but there's only one method of sorting, so if an item is sent to the bottom of the list, it'll always be at the bottom no matter how many times you try to sort. Technically speaking, if you pick up or buy an item that's not already in your inventory, it will no longer be the last item in the list. However, if you sort your equipment, there's a chance it may end up at the bottom again.
On the right side of the Items section, is a list of fish that you caught. Yes, in Chantelise, it is possible to fish. There are a total of 46 different types of fish that you can catch throughout the area. If there's water, chances are good that you can fish there.
Magic Summary gives a simple list of the different types of magical techniques that can be performed up to the current stage of the game. It is possible by the end of the game to chain up to 4 magic stones, but you can never pick up any more than 6.
Option gives the same options that were available at the main menu option labeled "Option".
Save simply saves a record of your HP, money and items (equipped, inventory and fish). It does not save your position, for example, just before or at a boss so you can try to fight it again by reloading the data. If you save in a fighting area, you will find yourself back on the world map. When you start a new game, the Save option will be disabled until you get to town. Note: You must use the Save option to save your progress, the system does not auto-save at any point in the game.
In the event that you are in practise mode, you will have 2 other options. In place of Equipment, will be Restart (やり直し) and above Items will be World Map (ワールドマップ). Choosing Restart will restart the stage and choosing World Map will return you to the world map. Choosing either option will still allow you to retain all items and money obtained up to the point of restarting.
